Tewa Women United: Water, Elders and Seven Generations

El Camino Real de Tierra AdentroThe River and Ecology · Culture and SpiritualityOctober 19, 2026

In the Española Valley, Tewa Women United works for the protection of water and the cultural lifeways that depend on it, guided, as its members say, by the wisdom of their elders and a concern for seven generations to come.

The group is part of Communities for Clean Water, a coalition of acequia, Pueblo and river organizations, including Amigos Bravos, the New Mexico Acequia Association and Rio Grande Restoration, that has worked for years to keep pollution out of the Rio Grande and its aquifers. Its youth have spoken at regional water gatherings themed on weaving Rio Grande communities together, which might be the best short description of the work itself.
