Rio Grande Farm Park: A Growers’ Cooperative in the San Luis Valley
In Alamosa, the Rio Grande Farm Park hosts two kinds of growers along the river corridor: commercial farmers organized as a cooperative, and families working larger-than-usual community plots for their own tables. They share a philosophy of regenerative and organic growing: no synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides, diverse plantings, cover crops and crop rotation, with care for life in the soil and along the Rio Grande.
Much of what they grow flows back into the valley, to farmers markets and to partners such as the SLV Food Bank Network, the Boys and Girls Club, Promotores del Valle and the SLV Immigrant Resource Center. Food security, soil health and community, braided together in one place on the river.
