San Felipe Creek: Del Rio Tends Its Spring

Amistad ReachRegenerative Community and Land · The River and EcologyOctober 19, 2026

Del Rio grew up around San Felipe Springs, among the largest springs in Texas, and the spring-fed San Felipe Creek still runs through the center of town on its way to the Rio Grande. It supplies the city’s drinking water, shelters species found nowhere else, and holds the favorite swimming holes of the town.

Neighbors are stepping up to care for it. The San Felipe Creek Coalition organizes cleanups, with volunteers working the banks and paddling kayaks to pull debris from the water, and this spring the City Council voted unanimously to move more than $1 million toward stabilizing the eroding Blue Wall embankment across from Moore Park. A creek, a city and a community, learning to keep each other.
